From dawn to dusk, the little owl Blink asks his mother, "Now? Is it time?" and repeatedly she answers, "Soon." As the butterflies loop and the squirrels leap, Blink fidgets, watching and wondering, "When will it be my time?" When the sun finally slips beneath the fields, and the night breezes stir, the mother owl guides her child into flight, and Blink understands that "he was meant to fly by night." The softly luminous pastel illustrations that take the woods from day to night are a lovely complement to the lyrical text. Childhood can seem to be an endless waiting time for each inevitable first, so this story of an owl's first flight is warmly reassuring and might be just the right book for special lap-time sharing.
